The family later moved to a farm near Marceline, Missouri, where young Walt developed an early interest in drawing and painting.

When Walt was still a child, his father sold the farm and moved the family to Kansas City, Missouri, where he purchased a newspaper delivery route that Walt and his brother Roy were required to help run.

Education

Disney took art classes at the Kansas City Art Institute as a teenager. When the family moved back to Chicago, he enrolled at McKinley High School, where he took photography classes, contributed drawings to the school newspaper, and attended evening courses at the Chicago Art Institute.

At age sixteen, he left school to join the Red Cross, serving as an ambulance driver in France during the final months of World War I, since he was too young to enlist in the military.

Career

After returning from France in 1919, Disney found work as a commercial artist in Kansas City, where he met fellow artist Ub Iwerks, who became a key early collaborator. In 1922, Disney and Iwerks started an animation studio called Laugh-O-Gram, which produced short animated advertisements but ultimately went bankrupt. In 1923, Disney moved to Hollywood, California, and founded Disney Brothers Studio with his brother Roy, who managed the business side of the company for decades.

The studio’s early success came through the “Alice Comedies” series and the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, though Disney lost the rights to Oswald in a contract dispute with Universal Pictures. In response, Disney and Iwerks created Mickey Mouse, who debuted in the 1928 short “Steamboat Willie,” notable as one of the first cartoons with synchronized sound. Disney voiced Mickey Mouse himself for nearly two decades. The studio went on to introduce further characters, including Pluto, Goofy, and Donald Duck, and pioneered early color animation with its “Silly Symphonies” series.

In 1937, Disney released “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the first full-length cel-animated feature film, a major commercial and critical success that reshaped the animation industry. The studio followed with landmark features including “Pinocchio,” “Fantasia,” “Dumbo,” and “Bambi.” Disney later expanded into live-action films, nature documentaries, and television production, and in 1955 opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California, the first of the company’s theme parks. At the time of his death in 1966, he was actively planning what would become Walt Disney World and the EPCOT concept in Florida.

Disney was a lifelong heavy smoker, and he died of complications from lung cancer on December 15, 1966, in Burbank, California, just ten days after his 65th birthday.

Net Worth

At the time of his death, Walt Disney’s estate was estimated at between $100 million and $150 million, equivalent to roughly $750 million to over $1 billion in today’s dollars when adjusted for inflation. His wealth was built primarily through his ownership stake in Walt Disney Productions and Walt Disney Inc., the private holding company he created in 1953 to manage his intellectual property.
